The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has been successful in providing LPG connections to almost all households in India. However, LPG consumption by the beneficiaries of the scheme has not been adequate to safeguard women and children from health-related risks due to indoor air pollution. There are several barriers towards sustained uptake of LPG and the elimination of stacking with biomass, fuelwood, coal, dungcakes etc. The major barriers related to affordability of LPG, availability of LPG and behavioural change needed to ensure sustained uptake are discussed in this paper.
