The South Asia Research Hub (SARH), DFID had initiated a Systematic Review (SR) Programme for South Asia. The programme aims at providing DFID country offices, policy makers and practitioners in South Asia with a robust assessment of the evidence base for their policies and programmes. As part of this program, a commissioned evidence summary (review of systematic reviews) on Behaviour Change Communication interventions in improving the delivery of health messages for ante-natal care in limited literacy settings was conducted in collaboration with Public Health Evidence South Asia (PHESA), Manipal University.

Objectives:

The specific objectives were to understand the evidence on

  • Effectiveness of different types and mediums of BCC intervention aimed at improving ANC coverage and up-take of ANC services in low literacy setting
  • To understand most effective BCC interventions to improve ANC coverage (at least one visit) and uptake of ANC services?
  • To assess the effectiveness of theory based BCC as compared to non-theory based BCC
