This joint work of LBNL, Prayas, and Regulatory Assistance Project, takes the exploration to the next logical level of achieving global appliance market transformation. Long lasting consumer appliances are responsible for about 30% of global electricity use which is slated to increase to 40%.  Super efficient models of most appliances can reduce electricity use by 30% to 50% compared to the average models sold in most countries. Only 15 manufacturers control 70% of global share of this market. Hence, a multi-country approach to deal with the globalized production chains of large companies can be effective in rapid promotion of super efficiency appliances. The concept was taken up by the US government, and at Copenhagen Dr Steven Chu, US Secretary for Energy, announced a multi-country program called Super Efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD), under its Climate REDI program. The International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Co-operation (IPEEC) is conducting a consultation towards implementation of this multi-country program.
