Perspectives on Epidemics in India: Past, Present and Future
Dr. Vinay Kulkarni in conversation with Dr. Raman Gangakhedkar
India has experienced several epidemics in its recent past. The first responders to such events are public health systems and local communities. Dr. Raman and Dr. Vinay have been engaging with such systems at multiple levels for over three decades.
At this Memorial event they shared their experience of managing epidemics, highlighting the pivotal role of public health systems and the importance of community participation. Their dialogue encompassed several aspects of health system operations, the role of different stakeholders, epidemic prevention strategies, and the nature of robust support systems.

Dr. Raman Gangakhedkar An expert in infectious diseases with exemplary research and leadership in management of HIV, Nipah, Zika, and COVID virus outbreaks. He served as Head Scientist of Epidemiology and Communicable Diseases at the ICMR and is a recipient of the 2020 Padma Shri award. |

Dr. Vinay Kulkarni One of the first physicians who has been involved in India’s response to the HIV epidemic since the late ‘80s. A founder trustee of Prayas, he has worked on awareness & capacity building of community based organizations, socio-behavioral research, and advocacy with the National HIV Control Program. |
About the Girish Sant Memorial Annual Event
Girish Sant was a noted Indian energy analyst and policy commentator, who unfortunately passed away in 2012. Throughout his professional career, Girish made immense contributions to the energy sector, primarily to serve the interests of the poor, prevent gross inefficiencies and improve infrastructure sector governance. His work, humility and eagerness to engage with challenging issues earned him respect and friendship from across the spectrum. He also motivated and mentored a large number of young researchers and activists to work in energy policy and governance issues. He co-founded the Pune-based non-governmental organisation, Prayas, working in the areas of energy and health.
